About Us
What are Shifting Mosaics?
Change is the only constant on the land. We can help you manage change, through cutting edge science, backed by powerful field services.
Shifting Mosaics Consulting was founded by Dr. Sonja Leverkus, a leading ecosystem scientist. Dr. Leverkus has used the concept of shifting mosaics as a foundation for her work.
The term was coined by Bormann and Likens, 1979 and relates to the myriad of patterns created on the land by vegetation, animals, humans, and disturbances, such as fire. These patterns create mosaics across our landscape that change over time.
Through a careful understanding of these ever-shifting mosaics, we can help you devise and implement strategies that support human activity, while still maintaining the overall health and viability of our ecosystems.
Mosaics on the Land

Wildlife
Resource selection, habitat, food webs, and predator-prey dynamics

Vegetation
Influence of weather and climate, disturbance processes, and invasive species

Humans
Conscious consumption, resource requirements, and infrastructure

Disturbances
Natural disturbance, industrial activity, and ecological cycles

Why it matters
In times of changing climate, where we see species movements and large scale disturbances across broad landscapes it is important to work together to conserve biological diversity, which translates into sustenance and sustainability for all.
